For the first time ever, the 2010 NFL Draft will begin on primetime television. Round 1 of the Draft begins tonight (Thursday, April 22nd) at 7:30 PM on ESPN. Rounds 2-7 will be completed on Friday and Saturday evenings. Here is the final installment of my NFL Mock Draft for the First Round. As always, the draft gets completely unpredictable after the first 6 or 7 picks. We are all guessing at this point as to what will go down, but lots of research has led me to my final educated guesstimate of how the first round will go down. For this mock, I am just slotting where I think each player will get drafted. For example, just because I have Eric Berry going #5 does not necessarily mean that I have the 5th team (Chiefs) selecting him. I just think somehow, someway that each player will get drafted at the number I place him. It may account for trades or any other happenings that allow a player to get picked up in that spot. Without further ado, here is my final 2010 Mock NFL Draft: ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. 1. St. Louis Rams - SAM BRADFORD (QB, Oklahoma) - One of the few no-brainers of the draft, Bradford will be the first pick off the board. The Rams haven’t drafted a QB in the first round in 40 years, and now is their time to select the next leader of their franchise. A team in complete disarray, at least they have a solid coaching staff in place, led by Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo. Bradford is the man the Rams covet, and will be chosen to become the franchise quarterback. His intelligence, leadership, accuracy, deep ball, and awareness are all off the charts. The only concern with Bradford is his injured shoulder, which appears to be in good shape now. With a year off recovering from the shoulder injury, Bradford appears to have gotten in incredible shape. He looks way bigger than he did in 2009. He will be the number 1 pick. 2. Detroit Lions - NDAMUKONG SUH (DT, Nebraska) - Another no-brainer, Suh is the most NFL-ready prospect in this year’s draft. He is a perfect man to occupy the middle of the defensive line under Jim Schwartz’s defense. Remember, Schwartz was the at the helm of the Titans defense when Albert Haynesworth won Defensive Player of the Year for his team. Suh is going to be Schwartz’s next Haynesworth. The monster defensive tackle is surprisingly mobile and quick to go along with his overpowering strength. His incredible attitude and work ethic makes him another sure pick at number 2. 3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - GERALD MCCOY (DT, Oklahoma) - The Bucs are looking to bring in their new Warren Sapp. Mccoy has the potential to be that good of a D tackle. He is a more mobile, explosive athlete than Suh, and he also bench pressed more reps than the #2 pick did. Some scouts prefer Mccoy over Suh, and either one will do for Tampa Bay. They grab Mccoy after Suh is off the board. 4. Washington Redskins - TRENT WILLIAMS (OT, Oklahoma) - Yup, that makes 3 Oklahoma Sooners in the top 4 picks of the NFL Draft. We know the Redskins are getting a Left Tackle here, but the question is who. For much of the last few weeks, it appeared that they were targeting Russell Okung from Oklahoma State, but now they are leaning towards Williams. Unless Washington trades out of this spot, one of the 2 is going to be selected here. Expect Williams. 5. Kansas City Chiefs - ERIC BERRY (S, Tennessee) - Here is where things start to get tricky. Berry is clearly the best player available at this spot, but the Chiefs have said that they do not want to draft a safety this high. But I have Berry going #5, so that means I either think the Chiefs will wake up and realize that the kid is an absolute defensive game-changer, or they will trade down. If they stick in this spot, it’s likely that Berry falls. But I think something else will happen, and the playmaking Tennessee free safety will go #5. 6. Seattle Seahawks - RUSSELL OKUNG (OT, Oklahoma State) - Seattle has many options here. They pick again at #14, so anything could happen with these 2 picks with their many needs. I think they’ll go with the franchise left tackle, a type of player that does not come along very often. Okung will be a great value pick here, as he was once considered a top-3 pick. 7. Cleveland Browns - JOE HADEN (CB, Florida) - The Browns want Eric Berry here, but I think he’ll be gone. In that case, Cleveland is likely to draft a cornerback. The options are Boise State corner Kyle Wilson, or Haden from Florida. Haden has been the top CB prospect all year, until he had a bit of a poor showing at the NFL combine. I still think Haden’s explosiveness, cover ability, speed, and confidence make him a sure bet as an impact corner. 8. Oakland Raiders - DAN WILLIAMS (DT, Tennessee) - I’ll be honest, I have no idea what’s going to happen here. The Raiders are always entirely unpredictable, and this year is no different. They have many needs, and many options. However, I see them trading this pick. I think someone is going to trade up to take the DT Williams or OL Bulaga. Don’t ask me who. Hell, maybe the Raiders trade this pick to get Ben Roethlisberger. Either way, I see the Tennessee D tackle going #8. 9. Buffalo Bills - BRYAN BULAGA (OT, Iowa) - Bulaga will be a solid offensive tackle that can play either right or left tackle. The Bills like Bulaga’s prospects as their franchise left tackle. They have other options here, including a quarterback. But I think they’ll be looking for a QB later in the draft, and go with the franchise tackle here. Anthony Davis and Charles Brown are also options as tackles, but Bulaga is the safe bet. 10. Jacksonville Jaguars - DERRICK MORGAN (DE, Georgia Tech) - During the college football season, Morgan was considered a top-3 prospect. There were even talks of him being the #2 pick of the 2010 Draft. However, his stock slipped a bit during his weak end-of-season performance and mediocre combine showing. He still has the ability and potential to be a sack machine as an end, and he has the size to stop the run. He’s a solid pick for the Jags to add a sturdy rush end. 11. Denver Broncos - BRANDON GRAHAM (DE/LB, Michigan) - Very tough to figure out what the Broncos want to do here. We saw the success that Elvis Dumervil had for Denver last year, so they can grab Graham to be in the Elvis mold. The Broncos have talked about grabbing a wide receiver, now that Brandon Marshall is gone, but I think they get one later. Josh McDaniels loves impact offensive players, but again I think they go with Graham to be an impact pass-rusher. 12. Miami Dolphins - ROLANDO MCCLAIN (LB, Alabama) - There hasn’t been much talk about McClain to the Dolphins, but that’s because they don’t think he’ll be around. But the best inside linebacker in the draft drops to 12, and Parcells grabs him. He is an impact linebacker in the Patrick Willis mold. Obviously, that would be a best-case scenario. But there’s no question that McClain is an NFL-ready linebacker than can start and be a leader for a defense. Miami gets a steal here. 13. San Francisco 49ers - ANTHONY DAVIS (OT, Rutgers) - The Niners clearly need offensive linemen. Davis is the best tackle available, and they’re happy to grab him here. However, if I was the GM of the team, I’m looking at Jimmy Clausen. He’s a great value pick here, and there’s no way that Alex Smith is the long-term option for San Fran. But they feel they can make a run with Smith now, and go after a QB later. Davis is a good pick for them. CJ Spiller is also an option, but the acquisition of Ted Ginn means that they already went after an offensive playmaker and kick returner. They settle for the solid tackle, Davis. 14. Seattle Seahawks - CJ SPILLER (RB, Clemson) - Someway, someway, Spiller is still available here for the Seahawks. Seattle is considering drafting the playmaking back at pick number 6, but that might be too high. They wait and see who falls to them at 14, and somehow Spiller is still available. They would be absolutely ecstatic to have Okung and Spiller, and it may happen. However, don’t be shocked if Spiller is off the board before this, or if Seattle trades up near pick 9 or 10 to get him. 15. New York Giants - KYLE WILSON (CB, Boise State) - I have no idea what my Giants are going to do here. New York is targeting Spiller and McClain, but it’ll be shocking if either falls to 15. If so, one of them is the pick. Otherwise, Jerry Reese will work his magic again and draft the best player available. The Giants need linebackers, but Reese typically finds need players later in the draft, and finds impact guys in the first 2 rounds. Wilson is a talented cornerback who is a good value here, and he can be a big playmaker for the Giants. 16. Tennessee Titans - DEZ BRYANT (WR, Oklahoma State) - Not sure if Bryant is going to the Titans. But I know he’s going in the teens, and I think the Titans might be open to a trade. I also think they could use the explosive wide receiver, so I have him slotted going here at 16. There are definitely other teams looking to move up to take Bryant or hoping he falls to them, but I think you need to trade up to get him. Dez B. goes in the mid-teens at 16. 17. San Francisco 49ers - JERRY HUGHES (LB, TCU) - Again, I think Clausen is the man here. But San Fran does not seem to want him, and they have other needs. I see them trading down here. Someone trades up to get a pass-rusher, either Hughes from TCU or Pierre-Paul from USF. I’ve got Hughes going here to a team that trades into this spot. If the Niners keep the pick, they could go cornerback, o-line, or even stick with a linebacker. So either way, I’ve got Hughes going 17. 18. Pittsburgh Steelers - MIKE IUPATI (G, Idaho) - The Steelers are at the top of the headlines of this year’s draft. They may trade this pick, or they may even draft a quarterback. But I see them keeping Big Ben, keeping this pick, and going with an o-lineman. Iupati is the top guard in the draft, and they love getting him at number 18. Pittsburgh fans may want something else here, but Iupati is a safe pick for a line that struggled last season. 19. Atlanta Falcons - JASON PIERRE-PAUL (DE, South Florida) - Pierre-Paul is a fascinating prospect. He is one of the top athletes in the draft and has off-the-charts athleticism and pass-rushing ability. However, he is a Junior College transfer and started just 9 games in Division 1. He’s extremely raw and does not have the field awareness that an NFL-ready prospect needs. But with a few years of seasoning, this guy could be a top player in this class. The Falcons take the risk and scoop him up at 19. 20. Houston Texans - RYAN MATHEWS (RB, Fresno State) - The Texans are targeting a running back. Matthews is the second best back on the board after Spiller. Seems like a perfect fit. Does that mean that it’s going to happen? Probably not. But I’ve got the match following through, and the Texans grab the bulky back that will demand touches early on. 21. Cincinnati Bengals - JERMAINE GRESHAM (TE, Oklahoma) - Another example of a perfect fit. The Bengals have been lacking a playmaking tight end for years, and Gresham is a high-end tight end prospect that deserves to go in the first round. Again, this is the NFL Draft so it’s probably not going to work out that easily. But I have the Bengals scooping up the Sooner tight end. 22. New England Patriots - JIMMY CLAUSEN (QB, Notre Dame) - What? Clausen to the Patriots? Not exactly. I think the Pats trade this pick. They’re either moving up or moving down. Either way, someone is going to be dealing with New England to grab Clausen here as he free-falls to the later part of the round. Similar to the way Aaron Rodgers dropped in the 2005 Draft, Clausen slides down to 22 and gets scooped up by a team that trades for him. Not sure who it will be. Minnesota is an option, as is Seattle and Oakland. Either way, I see Clausen falling no further than 22. 23. Green Bay Packers - CHARLES BROWN (OT, USC) - Brown is rising on teams’ draft boards, and is likely to go in the mid-first round. Green Bay could go elsewhere here, but they are looking at offensive line as well. I like the fit here, and Brown can play multiple positions for them. 24. Philadelphia Eagles - EARL THOMAS (S, Texas) - Some people have this guy going in the top 12, and others have him dropping to the 30’s. I have him in the middle, going 24 to the Eagles. Thomas replaces the void left by Brian Dawkins 2 years ago, and he can make plays for that defense. He also is being considered as a cornerback prospect, too, because he has the cover skills to play the position. Definitely a good pick for the Eagles. 25. Baltimore Ravens - JARED ODRICK (DT, Penn State) - A dynamic tackle prospect, Odrick is just as fast as he is strong. He’s a great value pick at 25. Baltimore has other options, but they’d love to have Odrick here. 26. Arizona Cardinals - SERGIO KINDLE (LB, Texas) - After losing Karlos Dansby, Arizona needs a linebacker. Kindle is more of a pass-rusher than a tackler, but he fills the need. Kindle has good upside as an outside linebacker, and is a nice fit here. Could be gone before this. 27. Dallas Cowboys - TAYLOR MAYS (S, USC) - The Cowboys cut 2 safeties in the offseason, and Mays is a nice playmaker to bring in at the end of the first round. He could go earlier, or might slip out of the first round. I like him here at 27. 28. San Diego Chargers - DEVIN MCCOURTY (CB, Rutgers) - The pick here is either McCourty or Jackson, the two best cornerbacks available. The Chargers could go running back as well, but I like the fit of a solid young corner to replace Antonio Cromartie. McCourty from Rutgers is the pick here. 29. New York Jets - SEAN WEATHERSPOON (LB, Missouri) - The Jets need a lineman or linebacker, but you never know what they’re going to do. The Jets have been making all kinds of moves, so they could trade up or down or pick a playmaker here. But I see them going conventional and picking the solid linebacker prospect, Weatherspoon. 30. Minnesota Vikings - TIM TEBOW (QB, Florida) - And the Tebow Buzz is over. The Gators legend goes 30th to the Vikings where he can learn from Brett Favre and also be utilized as an H-back if needed this season. Tebow is likely to get scooped up by some team in the late first, especially Jacksonville trading up. But I see the Vikings staying put and drafting Tebow here. 31. Indianapolis Colts - DEMARYIUS THOMAS (WR, Georgia Tech) - The Colts don’t need much, and they go with a young wide receiver to continue to build on their WR corps. They could go with an offensive or defensive lineman, as well. Another option is linebacker. But all their guys are gone, and the Colts go with the WR from G-Tech. 32. New Orleans Saints - KAREEM JACKSON (CB, Alabama) - Jackson might go higher, and is a nice pick for the Saints at the end of the first round. The Alabama corner can cover and tackle and will be a good fit for the playmaking New Orleans D. Alright, let’s see how I do! Should be an exciting first round tonight.
