The No. 1 Penn State Nittany Lions women’s volleyball team has now moved into a tie for second in NCAA sports history with 92 consecutive victories. They have now tied North Carolina’s women’s soccer team that had a similar run from 1990-1994. The Nittany Lions tied the record last Saturday with a straight-set victory over Northwestern. Miami’s men’s tennis team, who had 137 consecutive wins, is the only program ahead of Penn State. The Nittany Lions will look to take over sole possession of second place in the record books when they play at Purdue on Friday night, November 20. Penn State (28-0, 16-0) defeated the Boilermakers 3-0 on October 24 at home. The last time Penn State lost was on September 15, 2007 to Stanford. Later that year the Nittany Lions defeated Stanford 3-2 in the National Championship game. In 2008, Penn State won their second straight National Title and third ever. Now in 2009 the Nittany Lions are looking to become the first women’s volleyball team ever to win three straight National Championships. Penn State has four games remaining in their regular season schedule and then will hope to host first and second round games in the NCAA Tournament inside Rec Hall. If everything goes right for the Nittany Lions they hope to end the season on December 19 in Tampa Bay with their 102 straight match victory and another national title.
