Although it has not been officially announced, the New York Yankees are moving players off of their official post-season roster and onto their practice facility in Tampa.

In order to get down to the official 25-man roster for the American League Division Series with the winner of today's Detroit/Minnesota one-game playoff, the Yankees will likely move relief pitchers Brian Bruney and Sergio Mitre off of their official roster. This will make room for Joba Chamberlain, the Yankees' botched experiment at starting pitcher, to regain his command and control in the bullpen.

Another interesting position for the Yankees to decide how many players to keep is at catcher, where manager Joe Girardi has already announced that Jose Molina will catch for starter A.J. Burnett in Game 2. This means Jorge Posada will not be playing in Game 2, taking his bat out of the lineup in order to soothe appease Burnett's preference for his own personal backstop. Whether or not the Yankees will keep a third catcher, Francisco Cervelli, on the playoff roster is up in the air. But keeping Cervelli would eliminate another spot on the playoff roster for someone like outfielder, Freddy Guzman, who can pinch run, or relief pitcher, Damaso Marte, a left-hander out of the bullpen.

One thing is for certain, however. behind the closed door of Joe Girardi's managerial agenda. The Yankees have chosen to play the first game of the series on Wednesday night, an option that is given to the team with the best record in each league. New York could have opted to start the series Thursday and play a shorter five-game series, but instead will make things even more difficult for the winner of today's one-game playoff. Either the Twins or the Tigers will have to play back-to-back games in different cities with after a plane ride into New York in the equation for Wednesday night's game against starting pitcher, C.C. Sabathia, and the Yanks.
