Yesterday I looked at the four teams in the AFC that started 2-0, now it is time to turn our attention to the five teams in the NFC that have unblemished records. NEW YORK GIANTS: The Giants are the team in the tough NFC East to get off to the good start. More importantly for them they have beaten two division rivals already, in the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. The win at Dallas was impressive because of the poise the Giants showed in front of a record crowd. Eli Manning has been impressive with three touchdowns and 586 yards, and looks to be in time with his new go to receivers Steve Smith and Mario Manningham, who both have over 200 yards of receiving. New York is definitely a contender and with their 2-0 start in the division look to be the early favorite to win the NFC East. The Giants are thinking two Superbowls in three years. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: Minnesota is off to a 2-0 start and sits atop the NFC North standings. However, their two wins have come against Cleveland and Detroit, who look like two of the worst teams in the NFL. Adrian Peterson looks like a monster, with 272 yards and four touchdowns in two games. Brett Favre has not had to try to pass the Vikings to a win yet, and Minnesota would like to keep it that way if they could. Rookie WR Percy Harvin is off to a good start to his NFL career, with two touchdowns. I am not sold yet on the Vikings, because of who they have beaten. They should contend for the division and wild card but I want to see how they play the next two weeks against San Francisco and Green Bay. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: The Saints are one of two NFC South teams to be 2-0 and have been outstanding on offense so far. They have scored 93 points in their two games and have won by a combined 44 points. Detroit didn’t have a chance to stop Drew Brees, who threw for six touchdowns, and the Eagles couldn’t stop the offense either. Brees has 669 passing yards and nine touchdowns already. Mike Bell has been a surprise on the ground for New Orleans with Pierre Thomas out. He has 229 yards and a 5.1 yards per carry average. Marcus Colston has reeled in three touchdowns from Brees already and Devery Henderson is averaging 21.8 yards per catch.
ATLANTA FALCONS: The other team in the NFC South that is unbeaten is Atlanta. Week one they defeated the Miami Dolphins 19-7 and in week two they took down Carolina 28-20 and picked off Jake Delhomme on a final drive to try to tie the game. The defense has played well so far in 2009. Matt Ryan is only improving in his second year at QB and looks good with five touchdown passes. His new toy to throw to looks good too and that is TE Tony Gonzalez. He has 12 catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Turner has carried the ball 50 times already and looks to be a workhorse for this offense when they hold a lead. The Falcons look to be contenders once again to win the division or at least a wild card spot. We will all learn for about them in their next stretch of games against New England, San Francisco and Chicago. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: The 49ers are off to a great start under Mike Singletary and without rookie WR Michael Crabtree. They have won two divisional games already, just like the Giants. In week one, they upset the defending NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals on the road 20-16 and then in week two beat the Seattle Seahawks 23-10. Frank Gore had a monster game against Seattle, where he rushed for 207 yards. That was important because against Arizona he only rushed for 30 yards. Shaun Hill has played solid and in this offense that means he has not turned the ball over. The 49ers look like they are contenders especially with their two division wins giving them a quick leg up. I think it will be interesting to see if they can sustain their good play for the whole season though. Shaun Hill will be the key, if he doesn’t turn the ball over they will be fine but I have a hunch he will, which is why I think the 49ers are the NFC team that is 2-0 right now that will struggle the most.
