Team USA is advancing to the finals of the Confederations Cup for the first time in their history after a 2-0 victory over the #1 ranked Spanish National team. Nineteen year-old Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey scored to lead the Americans to their first victory over Spain in four chances, and only their second win against the #1 ranked team ever. This was the first defeat for Spain since 2006 and the first time a non-European team has defeated the Spaniards since 1999. The Spanish had won 15 straight matches, which was an international record, and had not lost a game in 35 consecutive games, tying the international record for such a streak. Altidore’s goal came in the 27th minute on a great individual play to receive the ball, shield off the defender, and put the shot on goal off keeper Iker Casillas and into the lower right corner. In the 74th minute Clint Dempsey was able to take advantage of sloppy defense by the Spanish and put a shot into an empty net. Midfielder Michael Bradley, son of Coach Bob Bradley, was given a straight red card for a tackle in the 83rd minute and will be forced to miss the final game of the tournament. Captain Carlos Bocanegra returned to his first game since injuring his hamstring in a World Cup qualifier on June 6th and was a boost to the American defense playing left back as opposed to his usual central back. The Americans will face the winner of the other semi-final on Thursday between Brazil and host South Africa with the final being on Sunday. Spain will play the loser of that semi-final in the third place match on Sunday as well.
