Los Angeles Lakers vs Oklahoma City Thunder >> Thunder come up short in bid to tie series
Written by Evan Jacoby - April 21, 2010

Final Score: Lakers 95, Thunder 92

The Oklahoma City Thunder had the ball, down by 2 points with under 30 seconds left. The opportunity to have the ball in their hands with a chance to win it on the road is all the young team could have asked for.

Unfortunately, Kevin Durant's three-point shot went wide right and led to more Laker free throws with 10 seconds left. Pau Gasol hit just 1 of 2, giving the Thunder another chance to tie the game. But with no timeouts left, Oklahoma City struggled to run a play and wound up having Jeff Green fire an off-balance three. The shot missed, and the Lakers held on for a 3-point win.

Because it was such a close game until the very last shot, the individual Kobe-Durant matchup became a side story. But both players played great games and made for an entertaining battle.

Bryant had 39 points and 5 rebounds for the Lakers, including hitting 13 of 15 free throws. He only shot 12 for 28 from the field, but hit lots of big shots in the second half.

Durant had 32 points on 12 of 26 shooting. He also contributed 8 rebounds and 4 blocks, but added 8 big turnovers. The 21-year-old superstar shot just 6 free throws.

The Thunder, who led the league in blocked shots during the regular season, had an incredible 17 blocks against the monstrous Laker front line. But the aggressive shot-blocking prowess led to chances for offensive rebounds, and L.A. tallied 19 of them.

Serge Ibaka had 7 blocks for Oklahoma City, a team that is loaded with young talent and terrific athletes. The sky is the limit for this team, but their 2010 season might come to an end in the next couple of days.

The Lakers barely won Game 2 at home, but their veteran coaching staff and player personnel knows how to get it done. It doesn't matter how you win, it's just that you come home with a W.

Phil Jackson is 44-0 all-time in playoff series in which his team wins Game 1. The Lakers have won Games 1 and 2, making it very tough for the Thunder to recover, despite how evenly-matched the teams may be.

Pau Gasol was the only other Laker who was in double figures in this game. He had 25 points and 12 rebounds. No other player scored more than 6 points, but a lot of guys contributed on both ends of the floor.

Russell Westbrook had 19 points for Oklahoma City, while Jeff Green had 12 and Nenad Krstic added 10. The Thunder were in the game from start to finish and had a chance to win it at the end, but just came up short.

It was a valient effort from Durant and the rest of the Thunder youngsters. Unfortunately, all the hard work and good effort has only resulted in being down 2-0 in this series against the defending NBA champions.

The series heads to Oklahoma, where the Thunder are a great home team. The last time the Lakers travelled to Oklahoma City, they lost by double digits. The Thunder must be confident in how they are playing and their chances to win at home.

All eyes will be on Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant in Oklahoma City, and we'll see if the young Thunder can come out with a win in Game 3.
