The Penn State Nittany Lions scored 21 fourth quarter points to beat the Northwestern Wildcats 34-13 Saturday at Ryan Field. Northwestern held a 13-10 lead at the half, but could not keep Penn State’s offense down the whole game. The go ahead touchdown was scored by Brandon Beachum with 12:27 left in the forth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run. That put Penn State (8-1, 4-1) up 20-13. The next two possessions for the Nittany Lions only lasted one play because of two explosive touchdowns. The first came on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Darryl Clark to Derek Moye. The next came on a 69-yard touchdown run from Evan Royster, putting Penn State up 34-13. Moye had six catches for 123 yards and a touchdown. Royster rushed 15 times for 118 yards on the day. Clark was 22-31 for 274 yards and a touchdown; he also rushed for a touchdown. He completed passes to 11 different receivers. Northwestern (5-4, 2-3) QB Mike Kafka had a great game going before exiting with an injury in the second quarter. He was 14-18 for 128 yards and rushed eight times for 42 yards and a touchdown in his limited action. Dan Persa came in for Kafka but was not as effective. He was 14-23 for 115 yards and rushed 14 times for 42 yards. Sean Lee led the Penn State defense that pitched a second half shutout with 12 tackles. The unit also recorded six sacks in the game. Penn State will now look forward to a big game on Saturday in Beaver Stadium against Ohio State. Northwestern will try to get back on track but will have a tough test at Iowa on Saturday. |
