Eastern Illinois University vs Penn State University Park >> Balanced Attack Leads Penn State to Large Victory

The No. 14/12 Penn State Nittany Lions dominated their FCS opponent, Eastern Illinois, using a balanced attack on offense to cruise to a 52-3 win Saturday afternoon at Beaver Stadium. Penn State had 285 rushing yards and 268 passing to total 553 yards of total offense.

The running game continued to come together, albeit against an outsized defensive line. The Nittany Lions averaged 7.9 yards per carry as a team. Evan Royster averaged 11.8 yards per carry on his eight attempts in the game to lead the Nittany Lions with 94 yards.

Stephfon Green rushed eight times for 58 yards and a touchdown. Backup true freshman QB Kevin Newsome, saw his first extended action of the season, playing some in the third and fourth quarters. He rushed seven times for 49 yards and his first career touchdown.

Daryll Clark had a good day through the air for Penn State (5-1, 1-1). He was 13-19 for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He threw one interception near the end of the second quarter when he was pressured with a blitz.

Chaz Powell had a team-high four receptions for 79 yards. He also scored on a 51 yard touchdown. Other receiving touchdowns went to Derek Moye and Brett Bracket. True freshman Justin Brown saw his most extensive action of the year and caught three balls for 45 yards.

The Penn State defense did not allow a point in the first half and only three for the game. They held Eastern Illinois (4-2) to 206 yards of offense.

The unit also produced points when Ollie Ogbu stripped Jake Christensen of the ball and Navarro Bowman returned it 91 yards for a touchdown with five seconds left in the first half. That gave Penn State a 38-0 lead.

A.J. Wallace had an interception for the Nittany Lions and made seven tackles. Josh Hall totaled a team-high 11 tackles from the middle linebacker position, as Sean Lee was again out with his sprained knee.

Jared Odrick had two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss in the game to lead a unit that was in the backfield a lot. The team sacked Christensen five times in the game.

Mon Williams was the lone bright spot for the Panthers. He rushed for 64 yards on 14 carries. Christensen was 13-25 for 137 yards and an interception.

Penn State plays their homecoming game next Saturday against Minnesota at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Illinois also plays their homecoming game against Tennessee Tech next Saturday.
