After 162 games the Tigers and Twins remained tied leading to Tuesday’s tiebreaker game, possibly the final game ever at the Metrodome. Starting for the Tigers is 20-year-old rookie Rick Porcello who is trying to prevent the Tigers from completing the biggest collapse in the history of baseball. Heading into the final four games of the season the Tigers had a three-game lead on the Twins, and then proceeded to win only one of four games to find themselves in Minnesota instead of New York for the ALDS. This season Porcello is 14-9 with a 4.04 ERA this season and has pitched well against Minnesota this season going 1-2 with a 3.04 ERA. In his last start against the Twins on Sept. 29, Porcello went 6.1 innings giving up only one run on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk. The Tigers hope that the youngster will be able to put up numbers similar to that to give Detroit its first division title since 1987. The Twins are countering with their ace this season Scott Baker. Baker is 15-9 this season with a 4.36 ERA and in his only start against the Tigers this season went five innings with one unearned run on five hits in the victory. Minnesota hopes that Baker will be able to continue the red hot streak the Twins have been on winning 16 of their last 20 games to force this elimination game. This is the second tie-breaker game for the Twins in two seasons as the White Sox defeated Minnesota in game 163 last year. The winner heads to New York for the first game of the ALDS on either Wednesday of Thursday and the loser heads home, and in the case of the Tigers tries to figure out what went wrong. |
