Michael Vick’s much anticipated return to the NFL happened on Sunday in Philadelphia against the Chiefs, as the Eagles won 34-14. Kevin Kolb was the story in his second career start and Vick took a secondary role. The Eagles used the wild cat from the beginning of the game and employed Vick into those schemes. Vick even lined up out at wide receiver on one of the plays. But, it was rookie RB LeSean McCoy who started in the absence of Brain Westbrook that took a wild cat snap and ran it in for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 7-0. Later in the first quarter it was Kolb with the QB sneak to plunge into the end zone for his first career rushing touchdown, making it 14-0. After the Eagles failed on a fourth down near midfield in the second quarter Kansas City (0-3) got their first points. They came on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Matt Cassel to Mark Bradley. Philadelphia (2-1) immediately responded on a Kolb to DeSean Jackson touchdown strike that went 64 yards. David Akers would add a field goal with 31 seconds left in the first half to make it 24-7. The only score in the third quarter was a 38-yard field goal by Akers. Kolb put the icing on the cake of his great outing with a 35-yard touchdown pass to TE Brent Celek with 6:34 to go in the fourth. Kolb was 24-34 for 327 yards and three total touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over at all. Cassel threw his second touchdown of the game with 1:52 remaining to Bobby Wade to yield the final of 34-14. Cassel went 14-18 for 90 yards and also did not turn the ball over. Vick was 0-2 passing in the game and had one rush for seven yards. He was on the field for a lot of plays but a lot of the time just handed the ball off to McCoy. McCoy rushed 20 times for 84 yards. Jackson caught six balls for 149 yards and Celek went over 100 yards for the second straight game with 104. Rookie WR Jeremy Maclin made the start in the absence of Kevin Curtis, who was out with an injury. Maclin caught four passes for 33 yards. The Philadelphia defense was solid against both the pass and run, only allowing 196 total yards of offense to the Chiefs. Larry Johnson, who ran the ball 19 times, was held to 2.0 yards per carry in the contest. The Eagles go on a bye week before returning to action in week five. Donavan McNabb is expected to be back by then. It will be interesting to see how Philadelphia uses Vick once McNabb is back. The Eagles did learn in this one that Kolb is ready if McNabb goes down again. Kansas City takes on the New York Giants next Sunday at home and hope to have WR Dwayne Bowe back after he missed this game. |
