Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles >> McNabb Doubtful, Kolb to Start and Vick to Debut
Written by Mark Eddinger - September 25, 2009

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field at 1 p.m. The game takes on an increased significance because Michael Vick will make his Eagles debut and see action for the first time since the 2006 season.

Kevin Kolb will make his second career start for Philadelphia because Donavan McNabb is doubtful with his rib injury that knocked him out of week one’s game against Carolina.

Kansas City (0-2) has lost games to Baltimore and Oakland and will again start Matt Cassel, even though he did not play that well against the Raiders in week two. Brodie Croyle managed the offense nicely against the Ravens in week one, throwing for two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Head coach Todd Haley has Cassel on a short leash because of his performance last week where he threw two interceptions.

There is no question that both teams QB situations are the headline to this game.

Kolb played solidly in his first start last week. He threw for 391 yards on 51 attempts. He also had two TD passes and three interceptions, but two of the INT’s came late in the game when the Eagles were down two scores or more and he was forcing throws.

The eyes will not be solely on Kolb because they will be on the other Eagles QB that will be on the field. Michael Vick will surely be a part of the game plan for Philadelphia (1-1). Last week in the loss to the Saints the Eagles showed a lot of wild cat sets and trick plays that seem like Vick could run better than Kolb.

It will be interesting to see how much the Eagles use Vick at the QB position, especially with McNabb out.

Another concern for Philadelphia is the fact that Brian Westbrook and DeSean Jackson have not practiced as of Thursday. Westbrook is already banged up with an ankle injury and Jackson has a groin strain.

With McNabb out it will be important for the Eagles to have their other top offensive players in the game to help Kolb and Vick. This means Westbrook and Jackson. If Westbrook can’t play rookie RB LeSean McCoy will have to have a good game.

If Jackson is a no go, TE Brent Celek maybe even more of a part of the offense than he already has been. He has 14 receptions for 141 yards in the first two games to lead the Eagles in both categories. Also, Jason Avant, Kevin Curtis and Jeremy Maclin would have to step up their production.

For the Chiefs they would like to get their ground game going to help out Cassel. Larry Johnson has only rushed for 2.8 yards per carry in his first two games.

The Eagles defense will look to rebound from a poor performance against the Saints. They did not pressure Drew Brees like they did Jake Delhomme in week one and the results were the complete opposite.

Storylines are abound and it is an important game for both teams. The Chiefs desperately need to pick up their first win and not drop to 0-3. The Eagles need to steal a win without McNabb before their week four bye week. McNabb is expected to be ready to go for week five.
