Ryan Ludwick went from goat to hero after striking out three times against starter Edwin Jackson. Against reliever Joel Zumaya in the seventh inning Ludwick was able to draw a bases loaded walk that gave the Cardinals a 4-2 lead. Detroit was able to push across one more run on Magglio Ordonez’s sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth but lost 4-3 at Busch Stadium. Starter Todd Wellemeyer (6-6) was able to keep the Tigers offense in check allowing only two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work to pick up the win. Rookie Colby Rasmus provided most of the offense for St. Louis going 3-4 with a triple and 2 RBI’s in the victory. Catcher Yadier Molina went 3-4 with a home run to deep center field in the second inning to start the scoring for the Cardinals. Edwin Jackson (6-4) tied his season high with seven strikeouts in his six innings of work, but again the Tigers offense has been unable to support the pitchers. Centerfielder Curtis Granderson was a lone positive for the Tigers going 3-4 with two home runs to give him the team lead with 16. But Granderson was the final out of the game, striking out against closer Ryan Franklin who picked up his 16th save in 17 chances. |
