Game two of the series between the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals features two pitchers currently going in opposite directions. Edwin Jackson is in the top five for the American League in ERA with 2.24 in his first season as a Tiger. Todd Wellemeyer is struggling this year with an ERA of 5.50, almost two runs a game higher than his other two years as a starter. The Tigers offense will look to take advantage of Wellemeyer as they hope to break out of a team wide slump of their own. Last night the Tigers faltered again and pushed their streak to seven of eight games with fewer than three runs. The Cardinals on the other hand may have broken out of their slump scoring 11 runs in the first game of the series. Tuesday was the first time since April 23rd the Cardinals have scored double digit runs and they hit their first back-to-back home runs of the season with Albert Pujols and Chris Duncan going back-to-back in the sixth inning. Only time will tell if Tuesday’s game was a slump-breaking performance by the Cardinals hitters, or just an anomaly. That coupled with the struggles the Tigers are having hitting the ball should make this a low scoring game decided in the later innings. |
