Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers >> Sox Pounce On Porcello
Written by Brad Jeffers - June 03, 2009

Despite not pitching horribly, Detroit's Rick Porcello was unable to continue his winning streak, as the Boston defeated Detroit by a final score of 5-1.

Porcello lasted just 4.1 innings for Detroit, allowing three earned runs. Ultimately those proved to be enough support for Daisuke Matsuzaka who looked much more confident on the mound than he had in his last few starts.

Although his command wasn't pinpoint, Matsuzaka pitched effectively throughout the game. In the five innings he pitched, he allowed six hits, walked three, struck out six and allowed only one run.

Boston's bullpen proved once again why it's one of the best in baseball, keeping the Tigers scoreless in the final four innings.

Offensively, the Red Sox were lifted by a two-run home run by Jason Bay off Porcello in the third inning. It was Bay's home run that took the momentum back from Detroit, and Boston never let it go.

Tomorrow night will be a showcase of two quality starting pitchers. Josh Beckett will take the mound, and Armando Galarraga will start for Detroit. Even though Galarraga has struggled this season, he is coming off a quality start. It should be an interesting game, with few runs being scored.
