Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers >> Dice-K Earns First Win
Written by Jamie McCracken - June 03, 2009

DETROIT, M.I. -- The "talk of the town" coming into Tuesday nights game (Detroit vs. Boston) was the 20-year-old rookie, Ryan Porcello who had won five in a row coming into the month of June. However, Daisuke Matsuzaka took the mound on the other side.

Dice-K was not at his full strength, but he had enough to get the job done. The ace pitched five innings, allowing one run as the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1.

The win gave Sox manage, Terry Francona, his 500th win. Francona became the third Red Sox manager to reach that plateau.

Matsuzaka (1-3) had an 8.82 ERA coming into the game, but allowed just six hits while striking out six batters in Tuesday night's win. The statistic to look at is the double play though. The Tigers hit into six double plays.

(Is this series going to prove how mediocre the American League Central is compared to the AL East?)

Four Boston relievers finished out the game after Dice-K came out.

Porcello (6-4) gave up three runs on seven hitsin 4 1/3 innings after not losing an outing since late April.
"You can't coast through that lineup," Porcello told MLB.com's, Jason Beck.

Jason Bay's two-run homer off Procello in the third inning lifted the Red Sox to the 5-1 victory. Detroit will continue the short three-game series verse the Bo Sox tonight in Comerica Park. Josh Beckett (5-2 4.60) and Armando Galarraga (3-5, 5.50) are set to take the mound Wednesday night.
