DETROIT, M.I. – The Detroit Tigers will enter a three-game home stand verse the first place American League East Boston Red Sox tonight in Comerica Park. The Tigers enter the series leading the American League with a 3.87 ERA. Rick Porcello will be on the mound for Detroit tonight. The rookie, two years removed from Seton Hall Prep in New Jersey, was a remarkable 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA in the month of May. Porcello (6-3, 3.48) has been an eye-catching pitcher on a Tiger team that has Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson who have both prominent starts to their season as well. Verlander is 6-0 and has had an ERA of 1.30 in his last six starts while Jackson has a record of 5-3 with a 2.30 ERA. Porcello, the rookie sensation, has been a complement to both Verlander and Jackson. Even Kaline, who made his big league debut at age 18 and won a batting title at 20, is blown away by Porcello's seemingly effortless transition to the majors. He told ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, "What can you say about a 20-year-old kid who's doing what he's doing?" Kaline said. "He's so mature, he doesn't get flustered. He's doing an amazing job, and he's still learning." Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox will send Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound tonight in route for his first win of the 2009 Major League Baseball season. Daisuke has an ERA over eight and has struck out just 15 batters in his four starts. However, Daisuke is not the only one struggling, David Ortiz has continued to disintegrate. “Big Papi” has had a shocking start to his 2009 season, which is already one-third of the way over. He has completely crumbled and slightly decaying his numbers each day. Ortiz is batting .185 with just 18 RBI’s and one homer to account for. Boston (29-22) lost two out of three in Toronto this past weekend. Detroit (28-21) has the top spot in the AL Central while winning two out of three in Baltimore over the weekend. The first pitch will be thrown out at 7 p.m. E.T., as the Tigers will begin a six-day home slate starting tonight with the Sox and concluding with a three-game series verse the Manny-less Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend. |
