Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers >> Boston Looks to Stop Porcello
Written by Brad Jeffers - June 02, 2009

Rookie sensation Rick Porcello is coming off of one of the best months for a 20-year old pitcher in baseball history. In the month of May, Porcello went 5-0 with an ERA of 1.50, and if Boston wants to win today, they need to find a way to get on base early and often.

The Red Sox have had no problem scoring runs this year, but their needs are double sided today, both in hopes of giving Daisuke Matsuzaka support, and to find a way to outhit a rather potent Detroit lineup.

Matsuzaka has struggled since his return to Boston this year, posting an ERA of 8.82 and an 0-3 record.

In order for Boston to win the game, either Dice-K needs to command the strike zone, or Boston needs to force Porcello to throw a lot of pitches.

Since Porcello is so young, the Tigers have been careful with how many pitches they let him throw. He has only made it through the seventh inning once so far this year. If Boston can keep it close, and get to the Tigers bullpen early, then they stand a chance to steal game one at Detroit.
