So remember how I blogged about a week or so mentioning the Big East and the battle it would be to make it out of the conference alive. Well, it is more true than even I realized when I said it.
Less than two weeks ago, the Big East had three teams without a conference loss. Today, there are no undefeated Big East teams left. They have all experienced the pain of defeat.
Let's start with Syracuse... When they went into their game with Pitt recently, they had not lost a game yet this season and were a top ten team. Their next game was against Villanova, in their home Carrier Dome. The Orange couldn't come away with a win in that contest either, and than perhaps the most shocking game was their contest last night with Seton Hall. Syracuse is a national powerhouse program, consistently sitting in the top tier of the rankings and conference standings. Now, they have lost three games in a row, and the loss to Seton Hall was by a difference of 22 points.
And if the Syracuse slump weren't enough to show how wacky the Big East can get, take the recent game between Pitt and Notre Dame for example. Notre Dame, came into the game with some signature wins but also a loss to St. John's that no one was expecting. But when they went into the Oakland Zoo to take on the number 2 team in the country, things seemed to click, and they took down the last undefeated team in the Big East, and seemed to even the playing field.
It's not just the Big East that has ironic things like this happening. All of college basketball seems to be a parody at some point during the course of a long season. The defending champions, Duke, had gone undefeated until the ran into Florida State and suffered their first loss of the year. And Kansas lost for the first time in 69 games at Allen Fieldhouse in a matchup with Texas.
College basketball is a game that comes with twists and turns, ups and downs, and surprises around every corner. Maybe that is what makes it so captivating, so exciting, so riveting. Fans never know what they're going to get. And that's the beauty of it.
