Last week I wrote an article about how some people were offended by New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan’s seemingly infinite amount of F-Bombs in the Jets debut Hard Knocks episode.

The story picked up weight after some viewers commented on Ryan’s language and after the coach admitted that his mother was displeased by his profanity use.

When Ryan was initially asked about the complaints regarding his language, he simply shrugged it off and said that people can think what they want but that he is going to be himself.

"Sometimes you get rolling and words come out and you don't even realize you're saying it. My mom is the only one really disappointed that I care about. I'm going to be myself." Ryan said.

At the time it seemed like Rex’s response to the complaints would mark the end to this mini-controversy, but just recently a former Super Bowl coach has shared his thoughts about the debut Hard Knocks episode and his comments have many people around the NFL buzzing.

NBC Analyst and former Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts Tony Dungy spoke about Ryan’s language on the debut Hard Knocks episode while appearing on Dan Patrick’s radio show. Dungy said that he was "disappointed with all the profanity ... I don't want to be around that. If I were in charge, I wouldn't hire someone like that." Coach Dungy even suggested that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should look into the matter.

Dungy’s comments definitely left the Jets coach steaming, prompting him to go as far as to try and call Tony.

When asked about Dungy’s comments Ryan said that someone’s character shouldn’t be judged by their profanity use.

"I'm always going to be myself and I'm a good person," Ryan said. "Just because somebody cusses doesn't make him a bad person. Just because a guy doesn't cuss doesn't make him a good person. I'll stand by my merits."

Even Rex Ryan’s father, former NFL coach Buddy Ryan, got involved in the war of words when he said that the issue is "none of Dungy's business."

I have an enormous amount of respect for Tony Dungy, regarding his coaching credentials and the way he coached up and interacted with his players. I’m going to side with Coach Ryan on this one though. Obviously, many coaches have had successful careers without being in your face or extremely boisterous. Dungy, Mike Krzyzewski, and the late John Wooden are a few names that come to mind that have shared this coaching philosophy. While Dungy may not approve of Ryan’s methods their isn’t a need to publicly condemn his coaching style. Rex Ryan is far from the first coach to use profanity as a means to show emotion and motivate his players and he won’t be the last coach to do it either. The old saying goes “sweep under your own rug” and people need to let Rex Ryan coach his team the only way he knows how by being in your face, emotional, and energetic. In case people forgot, that coaching style did help guide the Jets to the AFC Championship game last season so I don’t think it is nearly as bad as it has been made out to be.

Rob,

Great article man. I couldn't agree more with you. I like Dungy too but there was no need to take a shot at coach Ryan. Its just two different styles of coaching.
