HBO’s Hard Knocks series is supposed to give NFL fans an all-access look into an NFL team’s training camp. The hook of the show is that the average fan gets to see the raw gritty emotion of training camp from the perspective of NFL coaches and players with no edited footage or scripted television.

The first episode of season 6 of the immensely popular reality show aired last night. This season television crews will be following the New York Jets as they participate in training camp in Cortland, New York. As someone who has viewed the show before I can personally say that it is fun to see the uncensored and candid talk from your favorite coaches and players. In the Jets premiere episode last night though, some fans may have gotten a little more uncensored emotion than they bargained for from Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan.

In the debut episode Ryan dropped countless F-Bombs when speaking to his players, coaches, and commenting on what he was seeing. Ryan was first alerted of his language in the episode late Wednesday night by none other than his mother, who said she wasn’t happy with all the profanity.

When Rex was asked about the language he said that is just him being himself and he is trying to prepare his team for the season.

"The problem is, that's what happens," Ryan said. "Sometimes you get rolling and words come out and you don't even realize you're saying it. My mom is the only one really disappointed that I care about. I'm going to be myself."

While some viewers may have been offended by the profanity, Jets players such as Sione Pouha says that the only thing that Ryan’s language shows is his passion and how bad he wants to see the Jets perform well.

"Skip the F-bombs and everything else," defensive lineman Sione Pouha said. "You can really feel that this guy is passionate about what he does and is passionate about his players."

Honestly, Rex Ryan shouldn’t feel a need to tone down his language at all. First of all, Hard Knocks is not being shown on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network it is being shown on HBO and like many of the channel’s other programs there is profanity. Second, people must understand that when they say they want a behind the scenes look at what really goes on that they are going to get a behind the scenes look at what really goes on. This is how Rex Ryan coaches and motivates his players; the same can be said if you wanted to attend a Bobby Knight led Indiana Hoosier practice or a Bob Huggins practice at West Virginia. Finally, this isn’t pee-wee football these players are all grown men and Rex needs to be himself to get the most out of his players and if that involves dropping an innumerable amount of F-Bombs then so be it.

Rex Ryan is just one of thirty NFL Head Coaches that are trying to prepare his team for the upcoming season. If viewers want the inside look at training camp then they have to be prepared to see everything, it isn’t fair to ask Ryan to censor himself just because the Jets agreed to have their training camp filmed.
