After watching the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in game seven of the NBA Finals, the first thing that came to my mind was whether Doc Rivers and the Big 4(Rajon Rondo now included obviously) would all be back together next year to make a run at the title.
Paul Pierce has reportedly said he will opt out of his contract, which will make him a free agent. Ray Allen is due to become a free agent on Thursday. Kevin Garnett is under contract for two more years, but Garnett has battled knee injuries the last two years leaving some analysts to question whether he will ever be the same dominant player. In addition to the questions surrounding the Celtics veteran threesome Head Coach Doc Rivers said he was debating whether to come back and coach the Celtics next year. Rivers has four children playing sports and Doc was considering taking time away from the game so he could watch them play. Doc’s son Jeremiah is a junior point guard at Indiana (he previously played for Georgetown) and his son Austin is a senior at River Park high school. Austin is ranked as the 6th best basketball prospect in class of 2011 by rivals. The only sure thing in the group seems to be Rajon Rondo who is signed with Boston through the 2014-2015 season.
Needless to say Celtic fans had a lot to be nervous about regarding the future. Today, Doc Rivers remarked about his future and as a result gave Celtic fans a reason to breathe a sigh of relief.
"I'm coming back," Rivers said in a text message to The Boston Globe. "I want another crack at it with this group."
Next year will be River’s seventh seasons with the Celtics. Doc Rivers has a career record of 280-212 with the Celtics. He has also led the team to two NBA Finals appearances during his tenure in Boston, including a 2008 NBA Championship.
Boston fans have reason to be giddy over the return of Doc Rivers, but they are certainly not out of the woods yet. As I said earlier it is unclear if Pierce and Allen will return next season. Kevin Garnett will be starting his 16th NBA campaign next year, and injuries are really starting to slow “The Big Ticket” down. Finally, as another year passes the Big 3 collectively continue to age. I will never count out three players who are as accomplished as Garnett, Allen, and Pierce but you have to wonder how many great seasons these players have left in them.
The one thing Boston can hang their hat on is that Rajon Rondo is set to be Boston’s point guard for the foreseeable future. His play last season was spectacular and he is definitely in the top echelon of point guards in the NBA along with players such as Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Also, the Celtics role players such as Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Tony Allen, and Nate Robinson are solid.
For now though Boston fans can rejoice that Doc Rivers will be back on the sideline next year as he takes what will most likely be his final crack at winning another NBA title with the Celtics. The only question is whether his full cast of players will join him in taking another stab at a championship.
