I don’t want to shock anyone here but Baltimore Orioles manager Dave Trembley has been fired.

Actually, there is really nothing shocking about this decision at all. The Orioles 15-39 record is the worst in the majors this season and the team has lost eight straight games. As if that wasn’t bad enough the Orioles were outscored 34-8 on their recent six game road trip in which they played the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees.
When Orioles President of baseball operation Andy MacPhail approached Trembley, he didn’t put up a fight but rather had a sense that this was coming.

"When Dave came up to see me, I hadn't even gotten a sentence out; he just waved me off and said: 'Don't worry about it,'” MacPhail said. "He was fine. He was gracious. I didn't even need to go into any kind of speech."

In his statement Dave Trembley said that while the results weren’t there, he was gracious for the opportunity to manage the O’s.

"The results on the field were not what any of us would have hoped for, and I understand that the organization felt the time was right to move in a different direction," Trembley said in a statement. "While I am disappointed at the outcome, I feel it was a privilege to wear the Orioles uniform each day."

MacPhail appointed third base coach Juan Samuel as interim manager. Trembley is the second manager to be fired so far this season, Trey Hillman was released by the Kansas City Royals on May 13th.

The Orioles desperately needed a new direction and hopefully this managerial change will spark the team in a positive way. It will be very difficult for Baltimore to salvage their season though. The AL East is arguably the toughest division in all of baseball and the Orioles do not appear to have the talent to compete with likes of Tampa Bay, Boston, and New York. Regardless a change needed to be made and now the O’s will try to start fresh with Juan Samuel helming the ship.
