The Philadelphia Phillies were six outs from taking a 2-0 series lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. Then the disaster that is the Phillies bullpen reared its ugly head.
Pedro Martinez pitched seven strong innings, only allowing two hits for the Phillies but left the mound at the end of the seventh looking like he thought he was done.
Charlie Manuel then decided to go with Chan Ho Park to start the eighth instead of Ryan Madson, who was the eighth inning man all year. Granted, Madson allowed two runs in the eighth inning last night and did not look confident.
After a leadoff single, Park could not field a bunt, which should have been one easy out at first base.
Then Russell Martin hit a ball that should have been a sure double play but Chase Utley threw the ball wild of first and the Phillies only got one out. Also, Juan Pierre scored from second on the throw, tying the game at one.
Manuel then decided to play the matchup game and brought in Scott Eyre to pitch to Jim Thome. Thome single and made it first and third. Then Manuel finally went to Madson.
He walked his first batter, Rafael Furcal and then struck out Matt Kemp. Manuel then went to J.A. Happ to face Andre Ethier. Happ jumped ahead in the count but then could not finish Ethier and walked him in. That proved to be the winning run.
Chad Durbin was immediately called upon to face Manny Ramirez, and on the first pitch Durbin got Ramirez to pop out.
Unfortunately for the Phillies the damage was already done.
The bottom line is that it is embarrassing as a Phillies fan and I would imagine as a player on the team that they needed to use five pitchers in one inning.
Sorry Pedro, but the Phillies just wasted your start with bad defense, bad relief pitching, and bad managing.
