The revolving door known as the professional coaching profession continues to pick up speed.

Especially in the NBA.

Yet, what's even more bizarre is how little importance teams place on having a good head coach.

Again, especially in the NBA.

The Pistons will be looking to hire their fifth head coach in nine years. Detroit signed both Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanuava to multi-year deals and neither player knows who they'll be playing for. It's not a stretch to say that neither player cares.

Toronto has an uncertain coaching situation, yet it just threw a ton of money at free agent Hedo Turkoglu.

Minnesota entered the NBA Draft with four first round picks, and no head coach.

Remember the days when coaches were involved in the draft process?

Phil Jackson even publicly pondered the idea of just coaching home games. The man has 10 NBA championships, and even he doesn't want to show up for every game.

Situations such as these raise the question, do coaches still matter?

I'm a firm believer that a great coach can do more with less talent than great talent can do with a poor coach.

What do you think? Do coaches still serve a valid purpose in the star driven league that is the NBA? Or are they just men in suits with no real authority?
